First Contact

Updated: Jun 19, 2019

European settlers crossed the Atlantic Ocean in the 1600’s looking for a new world. When the first settlers landed in Quebec, this new land was already inhabited by the indigenous peoples living there. Between them, they helped build commerce from the fur trade. The First Nations traded animal furs for commodities like food, jewelry and weapons. The two groups also warred at times over land and resources. Many first nations people died from the disease that was brought over from Europe to which the First Nations people had no immunity to fight. As the Europeans began to build governments, they enforced their rules, lifestyle and beliefs on the First Nations in an attempt to “remove the savage” from them. As the European population grew larger, and the first nations smaller. The first nations people held on to their culture through the preservation of structures connected with the past.
